Contributed by crazychook, Gidgegannup WA I have made my brooder from a plastic storage crate, and a plastic clip-on work light. But its their first night out of the incubator and it was getting a bit cold, so I thought I would help warm up the chicks by making this simple "heat box". Horror of horrors, I made it from a brand new plastic cake container turned upside down, with little entry doors cut out of two sides with scissors. It works really well, when i put my hand inside it, it was really warm! It works both by absorbing the heat from the light, and by holding the chicks' body heat. The little fluffies seemed to find their way inside it OK. It will do them for a few days until they are too big to get inside it. If you don't have so many chicks, an ice-cream container would do the job.
